the other reviewers must have had a bad night or the bottle was off, but the bottle my wife and i just polished off was ethereal, redolent of ginger, lychee and spice. On the palate, the wine followed through with a peppery nuance typical of this variety. Rich and mouth-filling, even the empty glass was fun smelling.

don't know if i like this as much as his federspiel wines, but it may just be a personal preference or an off bottle. the smargd seemed to have an earthy funk that gradually blew away, but it never seemed to have the brightness and energy i usually associate with GV. was pleasant with dinner, but i wouldn't enjoy this by itself.

July 3rd Wines; 7/3/2013-7/4/2013 (Matt & Summer's): Exotic and pungent nose of unripe banana peel (the green kind), melons, pepper and minerals. Its palate is decent - has a meaty character to it that's been hard for me to conceptualize. Its sauvage character is pretty wild and goes nicely with the dense fruit. Air is really helpful here...the fruit certainly deepened with time. Very nice for an entry level Gruner.
