  • This is a lovely wine. Honey and honeysuckle on the nose, rich botrytis and apricot jam on the palate. Some toasty notes too. This is obviously a very sweet wine but there is just enough acidity to keep it on the right side of cloying. I think the high alcohol helps too—you get just a little heat on the nose that balances the sugar. It was just as good on day two as on day one.
So: All those things were in balance—sweetness, acid, alcohol—and it has a rich and developed flavor. But I wanted something more from this wine—more florals, some tropical notes, something unexpected or revelatory. I didn’t get any of that. Beautifully made for what it is, but I wish it could’ve been more.

  • Opened yesterday, when it was breathtaking, notes from today. On the nose: candied ginger, molasses, cinnamon spice, honey. On the palate: lovely spice and acidity, good sweetness, but beautifully tempered by the lively acidity. Spicy ginger and molasses on the finish. Yum.

  • Blind Barolo Bonanza - Pandemic Edition (Castle Pines): From back when Luis was still living and making these wines. I believe this bottle had been opened for some time before it was served. Dried apricot, marmalade, honey and citrus zest. Sweet for sure...but there’s great acid too, giving this impeccable balance and remarkable intensity. The finish lasts forever and a day. I’m literally begging for blue cheese right now.

  • {375ml} Have had this a few times over the years, and I have to say I think I liked it better about a decade ago. There's still some solid enjoyment to be had, but, as I said, I found it pretty thrilling some years ago; still holds a young-ish color. 13,0% abv. recommended
