Deep maroon red, uniformly fading at edge of rim. Deeply colored. Nose reticent at first, then plum, black raspberry, hint of red licorice, complicated by hints of leather, pine and black fruits. Resolved tannins add viscosity on the palate, rich but balanced medium weight flavors of black berry and black raspberry, rich but with balancing acidity. Medium to long finish with crisp acidity at the end. A perfect mature example. In context probably worth 95-96 points with air.

Ageless color. Yes, it’s big and a little spirity on the nose, with a graphite hint, but all-in it is balanced. The palate is still tannic, with restrained dried fruit and iron notes. The finish is fairly long. Not the most friendly wine, but clearly aging well for its type.

"I drank all the Giz" (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Clearly a wine on its last legs with a slight bit of oxidation, and more egregious, a huge whiff of brettanomyces. Chewy and meaty, but drying out as well -- the fruit has dried fully dried out. The usual end result of a Parkerized fruit bomb.

The Cat Sitters arrive (Wanaka Wedge House, Queensberry, Central Otago, New Zealand): Beautifully resolved wine, in a high-alcohol, rich style. But this has finesse, impeccable tannic structure, earth, bottle age, and stunning palate presence. The nose, in particular feels refined, multi-layered , and far more exciting than many old PSs are want to be. Fabulous finish, and totally hides its 14.8% alcohol level, feeling like refined fine.

Still dark in color and still youthful. Plums, spice, pepper and perhaps a bit of meat. Loads of tannins, but drinkable with food. This seems like it could last for quite some time more.
