Decanted for about an hour, then served blind alongside the 00 Sperss. The nose showed more closed with a bit of a green streak to go along with oak spice and black fruit. Polished palate similar to the 00, and still quite young. The fruit is a bit reserved on the palate, not quite as deep or complex as the 00 but also displaying a modern international style. The 98 and 00 were very similar, I had a slight preference for the fruit/palate of the 00.

A wine with an excellent complexity. It kept evolving for hours in the glass. Cherries (red and black), strawberries, black currant, olives, tar, smokey Oak, dried herbs. A wine that you just shouldn't consume too quickly. Still plenty of time left on this bottle.

Wilted roses, a lot of dried currants, cherries, strawberries, blood orange and some minerals. Again, guess were off by more than 10 years on the younger side for this one, but I thought that there was plenty development on this already. I also got some rusticity here; dustiness and earth. With air this showed more stewed fruit character and more ripeness. Think this was slightly better than the previous bottle I popped at a lineup which coincidentally also featured an aged Aldo Conterno.

Piedmont theme: Guessed 2013 because it was showing so youthfully with structure. Similar to the ‘97 alongside in that it was modern but refined. More elegant but less imposing and mid-palate weight than the ‘97. Still a long way to go for this and another superb Gaja.

Short finish, not sure what’s going on here. Not showing well
