all wines terrific. generally the older Gaja's were darker, brooding and more intense, whereas the others were more elegant and easy going. most of us enjoyed the Clerico the best, as it was right down to middle - not too big or intense... rode the line of elegance and pleasure.
FLIGHT ONE: 1997 Gaja Sperss: dark, intense black/purple fruits, terrific aromatics and a forever finish. 95
1997 Gaja Conteisa: similar dark, intense, black/purple fruits, but more bitterness in the finish. still good, but almost too intense.93
FLIGHT TWO: 2004 D. Clerico Ciabot Mentin Ginestra: just a wonderful balance of red/purple fruits, aromatics, elegance and pleasure, long lingering finish.96
2008 Azelia San Rocco: Overshadowed by the Clerico, but a terrific young wine with a darker fruit profile and intensity compared to the Clerico... needs a longer decant or more time in the cellar.94
2008 Brovia Ca'mia: this wine was the lightest in color and fruit profile, along the candied cherries realm. somewhat junior varsity compared to the others but still enjoyable.91
FLIGHT THREE: 2013 Gaja Sperss: too young, a bit disjointed, but also a departure from the intense dark profile of the 1997's, just purple, no black fruits. 91+?

New York Wine Experience 2018 (New York Marriott Marquis): As I said to my wife, if you don't like this, you don't like Nebbiolo. As it happened, she loved this wine and rightly so. This is so wonderfully Nebbiolo and is enjoyable today. Rose, tar, violet, cherry nicely balanced with the oak. the finish is worth waiting for and is just the highlight. This is just excellent, and the best it will only get better :)

of course needing time but quite round and clearly well made - interesting to have it next to the Barbarescos - a bit less elegant low and less of an early drinker
