Community Tasting Notes (11) Avg Score: 92.1 points

  • This was consumed at a dinner with friends so I didn't take detailed notes. On opening it there are aromas of red fruits and in the glass its a relatively deep red, but I detect that some pigment has faded since last I tried it and there's slightly more brick tinge to it now. There are also signs of aged Nebbiolo (in a pleasant sort of way) starting to develop. This remains highly drinkable, but I'd wait no longer than another 2-3 years to drink this up whilst it remains so enjoyable.

  • Floral, herby, cherries, and a streak of raspberry balsalmic. Plenty of savory notes and spices wrapped around a sweet core. Lingering tannins contribute to a dry finish and do not detract.

  • Fortunately, this 3rd bottle from the case was exactly like the 1st bottle (24th Nov 2015) rather than the 2nd (7th Dec 2015), which was flawed. This wine gained weight, intensity of flavors and complexity over the evening, which makes me think that I hadn't given its 1st outing long enough to show its true colors. I'm therefore raising the score from 93 to 94 as it just crossed the border into outstanding.

  • Certainly not a patch on the first bottle out of the case that I opened recently (24 Nov 2015). The aroma was unpleasant, and in taste it was bitter and totally lacking fruit. With time it just went backwards and became distinctly woody. The pungent smell was just so overpowering after a while that I could not finish it. My first bottle was more in line with others' comments. I therefore won't give this 2nd bottle a score because it was clearly defective. I just hope the remainder of the case isn't like this 2nd one - I'll have to open another soon just to find out!

  • This 2007 Barbaresco was ready to go almost from the start with nice floral aromas from the moment the cork was pulled. Medium-full bodied, the wine showed red fruits on the palate. It's beautifully smooth, easy to drink with light acidity and polished tannins. Finish is medium in length. Excellent, enjoyable Barbaresco, but perhaps slightly lacks the complexity to be rated outstanding. This is in a good place now and should last a number of years longer. But I somehow doubt the potential to evolve further complexity. I'm therefore going to enjoy this now whilst I know by my tastes it's in a good zone.
