Coravin fun - Random Australians with ring-ins (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Initially smells like a riper version of the 2011 Caronne Ste Gemme from yesterday; herbaceous green notes dominate ripe black fruits; currants, a little baked earth, leather, slight sweet spice, graphite, pencil shavings, and a touch of alcohol prickle. The palate is very much a reflection of the nose with juicy acid, drying slightly chalky tannins and alcohol warmth on the finish, the fruit is a little more to the fore here. Hmm.

First Wednesday Wine Club Cabernet choice (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Menthol, eucalyptus, fresh herbs, very herbaceous, over caramel, very slight black fruits; blackcurrant that grows with time. The herbaceousness translates to the palate, the fruit proves a little sour; medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, touch of beef extract, drying chalky tannins. Meh.

For whatever reason, I did not post a TN within a meaningfully short period of time drinking this bottle. I recall it as decent, but cannot say more than this. My apologies.

Darkish garnet. Developing nose of olives, herbaceous greenly-tinged cassis fruits, touch of capsicum (bell-pepper). The longer I sniffed the greener it seemed to get. It was done no favours by following a young Torbreck shiraz, but still the palate of this is really rather unripe, with harsh green tannins outliving what fruit there was to start with. Medium-bodied, and not over-oaked, but really simply lacks ripeness. Not falling apart in an objective sense, but at 8 years old this is just going to get worse. Drink up fast.

Note: I use a rating scale for which 85 represents a very good wine.
Upon opening, and with some air, reasonable, bit not particularly impressive. Two-three days later however, very nice and smooth. Maybe a long decant?
