  • Lovely merlot - old school - limited structure - still showing some fruit - short legs...drink up!

  • I was intrigued with people saying this one was almost done, and further intrigued by the 80-something point ratings. This is not a pop and pour wine, and this was found out tonight. Thinking that the wine was possibly done, the cork was withdrawn with minimal bleed to find some sediment on the cork, but a strange distribution. The cork and bottle both smelled like....rubber and cork. Uh oh. Wine was poured into the glass a nice clear dark crimson color. Nose was..cork. Uh oh. Taste was metallic and rather thin. Great. Just when I was going to dump the wine 15 minutes later, I tasted the 3oz sample I had poured out and WHAM....hello Merlot! This one slowly over the course of 2 hours developed a beautifully dark and earthy tone, but was never more than medium bodied. A little thin for a Merlot, hence the sub-90 scores I believe. Not really much aging potential here. Was a little better at the vineyard. This one opened up with fig and dark earth from the start. The wine turned a little sweet in the mid-palate, with some baker's chocolate and a hint of sweet plum. Finish was earthy, soft, velvety, relatively devoid of tannin. Rather heady, as by the second glass I was wondering if I needed to save the remainder (it wouldn't have lasted). A rather simple merlot that left nothing after the wine was taken down. I think this one is on its way down. If you have this one it's probably time to start drinking it.....especially if you have a case of this or more. Probably was a 91 about 12-18 months ago.
