  • Drinking beautifully now. Still time at it’s peak - another 3-4 years probably. Classic Clonakilla.

  • Bob's cellar. Faded ruby red. Earthy opening nose, warm red spicy fruit, heavy menthol, and cherries, redcurrant are faint but there. Tasting opens with a quite bright redcurrant, but with a sweetness too, limited black fruits and plums, still pretty good shape for its age. Have just decanted this and tasted and will see how it progresses.
As this opens up, the Rhone characteristics come through, a slight meatiness lifted by a relaxed red cherry and currant spicy fruitiness. Excellent. This is a really good Clonalkilla, and way better than the recent 2003 vintage tasted. Last bottle unfortunately - this is an superbly enjoyable aged wine. The drink dates (2010-2017) don't do it justice.
Night 2 - this has opened up to a vista of sour cherries, a certain meatiness, saltiness and depths of black fruit. Really engaging and interesting wine.

  • Popped and poured. Supposedly the closest thing to a Côté-Rôtie in the new world. Lots of sweet fruit but not jammy. This had a creamy texture that I haven’t gotten from any Rhones before though. An elegant wine with little spice, but the power wouldn’t have been in line with a Côté-Rôtie.

  • Absolutely perfect cork.
    Nice dark colour, ruby rim.
Bright crushed berries, plums, licorice, light earth and pepper.
Powerful flavours, silky texture, plums, licorice and tar, sweet fruit, a little stalky spice. Refined tannins and good acid balance. Hints of earth suggest development but seems to have many years ahead of it.

  • Classic Cote-Rotie notes of smoked meats and violets, medium garnet colour - one could almost call it blind as a solar vintage Cote-Rotie. Fresh but not as fresh as the real thing so that's how it gives its New World roots away. Nonetheless, this is classy wine and is evolving and ageing rather than merely getting old like so many Parker-goo-monsters. Clear drinking at peak, and very nice but not worth the US$100 tariff of current vintages when compared to many mid-level Cote Roties
