  • Smoky, very intense nose; structured, needs a few years, distinct plum; good clean acid on the finish. 86

  • Not bad for the $. Some good fruit, but practically no finish.

  • Decanted an hour and drunk over several. Spicy black fruit nose, juicy (good acidity) but simple fruit palate and short finish. Sweet in the mouth. 14% alc. Not bad, but probably won't repeat.

  • Decanted this for 4 hours first...not at all impressed, even if QPR is considered. Mine was very "hot" on the nose (burned to sniff deeply), and this carried though to the palate. The wine was interesting, not a fruit bomb from my perspective though....I got more earth/dirt tones, little fruit, with alcohol the predominant flavor. I did not try it with food, so I'd be curious about how others have had it. WS and RP both gave this high ratings, but I don't see what the big deal is. I wonder if the fruit has faded already? I think that WS said that it would be best drunk within the year to get to the fruit.

  • Tasted this 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) side by side with the 2004 Finca Hoya de Santa Ana Monastrell Altos de la Hoya (also 100% monastrell). Dark purple-red to ruby color, clear. Seemed slightly lighter in color than the Altos de la Hoya. Powerful, youthful aromas of Ripe Black Cherry, Black Raspberry and a bit of forest floor/mud. Compared to the Altos, this was a more open nose of more in-your-face aromas, however the overall impression was slightly less complex.

On the palate, this wine was dry, full bodied, with lively acidity, and high levels of soft to astringent tannins (this is a tannic wine though-especially until it's been open 2 hours when they smooth out). Moderate to powerful flavors of black cherry liqueur, heavy, intense fruit and some leather, definite spice notes, one of them being black pepper. This wine comes across as in-your-face and fun. But be aware this is a big wine with strong, muscular personality. Not much delicate about it. I think we all probably use the term 'fruit bomb' too much but it definitely applies in this case but in this case that fruit has an edgey attitude.

Compared to the Altos, this wine was a bit simpler but just as 'good'. Honestly, considering the price difference I think this is the better buy. The type of big meats or spicy/spanish/mexican fare you'd be likely to pair this with don't really require a 'nuanced' wine now do they?

This wine has a 30 second finish of chewy, satisfying tannins.

Finished the bottle with a firm irish hard cheese and this was also a wonderful balancing component to this big wine to round out the evening.
