  • Significantly softer and beautiful fruit aromas. Medium tannin and chewy. cinnamon to the palate. Totally in the sweet spot.
Later that night, really jamming. The finest sandalwood, licorice.
Day 2, cherry and gunflint. Very mineral palate. Fine, fine sandalwood and dried flower. Yes, medium tannin, chewy. Really excellent expression next to the 2012 and the 1985. Lots of flakey sediment. Decant for sure next time.

  • Overall:
This bottle is obviously quite good and well crafted, especially in it's prime (probably 5-6 years ago); however, at this point in 2016, it's at the very end of its drinking window. It was still very good, but it was absolutely showing signs of its age. I would not buy another bottle of the 2000 vintage because of this, but I am glad to have experienced the one I did have. Out of the three of us, two of us liked it, and one of us less so.

    Timeline:

    16:29 (Bottle opened and decanted)
Tons of sediment in the bottle.
Heavy bricking. The wine has a serious brown edge and hue.
Probably didn't need the decant, retrospectively.
Beautiful aroma of aged nebbiolo – notes of a nice balsamic, but not too much
    Cleary a nebbiolo.
    Medium grippy tannins. Really nice.
Cherries, but they are in the background. The age of this bottle has suppressed much of the bright fruit.
Very slight licorice at this point and hints of chocolate.
Silky, plush mouthfeel. One of the most appealing aspects of this bottle.

    16:42
    Tannins are perfect.
Chocolate nose and smoky firewood aromas.
    Hints of leather.
Andddd the licorice aromas really starts to shine through.
    Some very nice, bright acidity.

    15:15
A whiff from the decanter reminded me of a toblerone bar. Interesting.
Reminds me of a chocolate chip pancake and maple syrup.
Maple syrup…strange but undeniable. All three of us agree on this.

    15:38
The mouthfeel is so good. Very silky and smooth.
Starting to take on a “savory” profile

    16:25
Soy and some “maritime” aromas (not sure exactly what, but they’re definitely there)

    19:32…onward
Classic flavors of an aging nebbiolo wine.
    Licorice still very noticeable.
Savory is probably the best word to describe at this point.
Quite appealing if you’re into wines that are showing a significant amount of age but are still absolutely drinkable.

  • Red cherry, a little menthol, leafy, medium tannin. Hint of smoke. Kind of tight at pop and pour. Tannin climbs.
Day 2, and again, some flintiness comes to on the aromas. Leaf and smoke. Deep sweet, a little maple-y. Still substantial tannin, although medium tannin.
Day 3 and a pleasant surprise as the aromas have really come around today. Sweet barrel tones. Not as leafy as days 1 and 2. Golden treacle palate with some mature cherry. A little menthol, and sweet walnut.

  • This bottle 180 from flawed bottle last time. Color is thin almost burnt rick thinning to the rim The wine layered the glass nicely with structured legs. Nose of leather, shoe polish, red meat, blood, tobacco, cherries. Good acidity on the attack with medium to bold tannins indicating it is still youthful. Palate of cherries, and red fruit. Dry excellent finish paired with chicken catchitorrie.

  • First bottle cork crumbled and wine was extremely brown in color. Second bottle had an excellent cork and was like the first. At first taste I thought maybe just stylistic differences in this wine from others. Took bottles to restaurant where the general manager is from Italy and familiar with these wines. He had the exact same impression as I did. He referred to it as 'marsalaized' as if they became Marsala wine. I gave them to him for his Kitchen. One bottle left to experiment with.
