  • Light ruby. This still had brambly red fruit, but 5 years has done wonders in terms of flesh and deepening cherry fruit. Still a lot of structure and soil. Quite positive evolution toward outstanding.

  • There is a disturbing amount of heat on the nose and palate. Label says 13.5% alc. Really dislike it.

  • Further Assessment of 2009 Beaujolais; 5/13/2011-5/14/2011 (San Francisco Wine Trading Company and Beltramo's (Menlo Park)): Licorice and cranberry. Lighter weight. Today more one dimensional and harshly tannic than most of the other wines, but this is meant to age, not enjoy over the short term. Both times I've tasted this, it has been an outlier compared to its peers, which I don't mean as a negative judgement; it is just a very different sort of '09 Beaujolais.

  • After the wine was tasted right after opening, it was aerated (Vinturi) and decanted at ~58 degrees for about 30 min. The nose is expressive, showing tones of dark cherry pie (in the best possible way), crushed granite, and pine. On the palate the wine opens with ripe dark berries and hints of cinnamon, but progresses to more tart berry and mineral notes on the midpalate. The wine has short to medium length, finishing with dry tannins, nice acidity, and an interesting pie crust element. The wine is light to medium bodied with good flavor intensity, but suffers slightly from somewhat clouded and overlapping transitions. This is a serious wine from Beaujolais that shows intense, bright flavors, but could use a few more years in the bottle.

  • Along with several other wines, this was an "anti-2009" Beaujolais. Clear purple. Sour cherry fruit and pine needles. Lean and linear, no extraneous sweetness, lighter weight, powerful acids, tremendous stoniness and some tannic clout to boot. This is Beaujolais for Volnay afficionados. It is a completely different animal than so many other Morgons I've tasted from this vintage. I loved the weightless intensity, but you need to understand what you're getting before diving into this wine. I'll put these toward the bottom of the 2009 Beaujolais pile and drink through many others before I touch these again.
