Wines like this Aglianico are what make Italian wines so exciting for me. The Campi Taurasini is deep and bold, yet holds onto that deft balance of acid, tannin, and alcohol that I believe is a trademark of quality Italian reds. There is something regal yet wild about the bouquet. Spicy black raspberry and cola notes (Dr. Pepper?) intermingle with warm cedary oak and fennel pollen. In the mouth the oak note is fractured into an array of Indian spices and dried herbs flowing on a velvet river of liquid rock and blackberry coulis. A true warrior-poet of a wine for the price.
