Online Blind Tasting: Cabernet Franc plus some Pirates: *** tasting note based on 0,1l bottle. Half of the bottle tasted completely blind on day one, other half tasted two days later *** Glass: Zalto Universal Clear, deep garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose. Dense, warm red fruit, some paint notes, mature. Dry, high, wonderful acidity. High tannin, a bid rough. Medium body. 13,5% abv, wonderfully integrated. On the palate ripe red fruit, a bit “dark”, spicy. Very deep and dense. Mature. Good balance. Long and spicy finish. This bottle was way more advanced than the 2004 we had a week ago and at its full peak. 91-92.

I have mixed feelings about this wine as I really wanted to love but ended up barely liking it.
Initially I was impressed by an incredible layer of staining at the bottom of the cork. the wine is obviously unfined and unfiltered and shows gorgeous concentration and extraction. Looking at it's deep ruby hues with just a slight bricking to the rim confirmed my initial impressions. On the nose the wine shows layers upon layers of black fruits like blackberries, black cherries and plums along with some redcurrant notes and hints of earth, blood and bees wax. The meaty sauvage component is quite strong in this wine and reaffirms on the palate. While there is a lot going on here in a positive way, the bad part comes in the form of huge and extremely astringent acidity and heavy tannins. This monster of a wine may improve in the next 10 years or so, but for now it's more a drinking experience rather than sheer pleasure.

Modest bricking. The wine opened up very quickly. Overripe layers of black fruits, good acidity, some kirsch and sweet vanilla Oak. However, after a couple hours the wine was starting to fade. Drink up and enjoy it at the tail of its peak.

Despite the vintage probably my favorite Austrian Red to date (I had a few) Structure close to Piedmont, Fruit and elegance truly Burgundian. Then, add a strong mineral tone for complexity. This is not a fat wine, neither smooth, but complex, long and rewarding careful preparation.

Fine acidity, mineral flavors, dark blackberry fruit, ripe and crisp at the same time, a hint of tobacco, clearly a gentle extraction and gentle oak ageing here, nice balance, but somewhat short on the finish. Honestly, it doesn't thrill me, for my palate there were several better Austrian red wines tonight. - 89+ points
