Classic nose of smoke, meat, game blood, and fresh herbs. At this stage the fruit has taken a step back - the wine shows as elegant, classic, and a tad reserved. But it is a poised and stately wine showing firm acids, crunchy red and black fruit - some blackberry. Touch of licorice. White pepper. Tree bark. Should do well at the table...I am about to grill a prime strip, so I'll find out!

Elegant intriguing nose. Delicate earth and smoke on the palate. Classic old school Northern Rhône with restrained fruit (especially at this point in its development) and moderate alcohol (12.5abv).

It has the core of a classic rustic Côte-Rôtie, with meat, pepper, and a touch of herbs wrapped around brambly fruit, which normally would have resulted in a delightful wine, but that core was obscured in this bottle by an unpleasant diacetyl buttered popcorn haze. I don't think the diacetyl would have been as jarring or unwelcome in a more modern Côte-Rôtie, or to someone who is less fond of a more traditional flavor and aromatic profile, but for me it seriously detracted from what would have otherwise been an excellent wine.

Saturday Bordeaux: A very nice classic Côte Rotie with the pepper and meat I love, they don't make many like this any more.

Quick note from the SoH party - Smoke, meat, dark berry fruit and good acids. A theme for quiet a few CR tasted this night.
