  • One of my favorite wines ever. So bright, rich fruit, complex spice, mineral. It's delicious. Still holding up after 16 years.

  • Holy Moses, this is delicious. Huge nose of blackberries, wood, toasted marshmallow, and crushed rocks. On the palate, vibrant mouth coating bramble fruit, and a stony minerality, like licking the rock on the label. Perfectly balanced acidity and a long finish. One of the best wines I've had in a long time. L6 comp!!!

  • Sandalwood, a sanguine, gamey funk, violets (R says vetiver). Has come together nicely on the palate, with tart and black fruits, medium weight and mellow tannins. Oak tannins and flavors are still noticable, but certainly much better integrated. Won't transform into a great wine due to the oak-fruit balance, but is changing nicely.

Interestingly, the funk is something I've encountered in other Mencias. It's more subdued here and complexing, though can be offputting if dominant. Perhaps there's a varietal characteristic here that stands out for Mencia.

  • For my palate, this was not as good a showing as a bottle two and a half years ago. Open opening it was extraordinarily tart. Tart in a way I don't recall having experienced before. After about 20 minutes in the glass, the fruit came out to play. This isn't as big as some of the other Mencia's I've had, which is fine in my view, but didn't seem to have the finesse of the last bottle. This one drank like Grenache to that bottle's pinot.

  • Really great mencia, perfect pairing with grilled steak. Very rich fruit, red and black cherries with a stony minerality. Secondary notes of spice and leather. Smooth tannins and mouthfeel, perhaps the best surprise. Lots of life left.
