  • Casual Wednesday session at ES BK. Bottle bought direct from Domaine and brought back to SG. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with a hint of garnet on the rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of dusty earth, wood toast, leather, ripe red cherries, light florals. Mushrooms and sous bois with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), resolved medium tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, leather, ripe red cherries, sweet red plum. Red fruit became more tart and sour after 1 hour of air. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Probably still alive because of good provenance at the Domaine. Time to drink up. As good as it gets. Further development will only be downhill.
From the village part of La Combe d'Orveau.

  • A real surprise really come into its own after 20 years. Earthy with real terroir and character.

  • Open the previous evening. Most of the fruits gone but tannins still dense.

  • My third 96 village in a few weeks, the others being Claude Dugat's Gevrey C and Dugat-Py's GC Coeur de Roy both impressive.

Less than 1mm of cork penetration showing that the wine has naturally evolved.

Structurally the wine is true its lieu-dit that includes both 1er and GC climat, not that it has the power of either. Its likeness is the Chambolle structure which retains the elegance of terroir in the detailed nature of the Anne Gros style.

The flavours are those of aged Burgundy, sous bois with cutting acidity. An impression of breadth and thickness that belies the vintage. I love these 1996 village wines.

  • Slightly perfumed nose with mature red raspberry and cherry aromas, plus some vanilla in the background. Same red fruit on palate, also reasonably mature, with moderate spice. I remember this wine from its youth as very forward and vibrant, but I wish there were a bit more acidity that would have maintained some of that freshness.
