  • Drinking well at 20 years from vintage — a muted floral nose precedes a palate of black cherries, wet earth, stony minerals and acid cut. Would be drinking great but for a too tart pink grapefruit finish.

Edit — 1/2: Showed a surprising amount of positive development over three days. Would seem to have some life ahead of it. It was pop and pour on night one, but I would have to say I’d give some air if I had a mulligan.

  • Late Night with Brian (Extra Space Boon Keng, Singapore): One of two (serendipitously paired) bottles of Anne Gros Combe d’Orveau, this was a good, solid village, but came across rather less charming and enjoyable than the 2008. It did have lovely deep nose, with bacon and beef, earth and brush, then deep draws of dark cherries and red berries, all tied together with a little stalky floral note. With time, I started getting a whole lot of dusty, chalky, earthiness that came out from amongst the fruit. Quite a masculine nose, not at all reminiscent of a classic Chambolle, but nice in its own way. The palate was well-structured, with fine but firm tannins and lots of fresh acidity (especially for 1999) running through sweet cherry and strawberry flavours touched by citrus orange notes, perhaps reflecting the cooling influence of the Combe on the vineyard. Past the midpalate, the fruit ceded way to a firm background of earth and mineral trailing away into a decent, if not exactly long finish with a flush of spice at the end. This was agood, strong village, if a bit on the stern side for a Chambolle. It has the chops to develop nicely over the next few years as well.

good but not perfect cork, decanted for 1 hour, enjoyed over 2 days

robe - nice transparent pinot , at 14 years old, showing some age with an orange/ amber nimbus. all in all, correct.
nose - surely shy at first showing some bright raspberry and flowers, very fresh. by the end of day two and lots of air, the nose started to develop that beautiful burgundy nose we all love. it began to gain depth and complexity with notes of beet juice and dried leaves. NICE.
palate - this really took some time to strut it's stuff. the first 80% had alarming acidity and i can see how people drank this too soon or think that it was not very good . i was starting to think the $50 i spent on this in 2007 was a waste. BUT once it opened up, the acidity started to melt, the tannins started to smooth out and those bright raspberries turned into an elegant burgundy.

suggestions - decant about 3 hours now or drink over the next 5 years. i have a bottle of the o2 and i plan on opening it 2017. for a village wine, this can cruise for almost 20 years.

  • Drank over 1 hour. Really pretty elegant nose of purple fruit and flowers. Palate matched with just a little earth. Really light, pure and pretty. Medium finish. Decent acidity.
