  • This was listed as Cuvee Speciale when I bought it, but the label doesn't say that. The front label says Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru with a separate Cuvee Vieilles Vignes sticker. The back label says, "Imported for the express use of Peter Locker and Friends." This wine is composed of two grand crus: Ambonnay and Bouzy. 29 months on the lees, disgorged Nov. 1996. I think that means it was likely bottled in June 1994, which makes this likely 1993 base. No idea what this wine is or how it corresponds to the current bottlings.

It's certainly mature, but still very good: very pinoty with baked golden fruit, red berries, salty cashews, some silky earthy grip, light in body but not short, savory. Delicious if you like this sort of thing, which I do.

  • Good, solid Champagne. Light gold in the glass. Predominantly Pinot Noir, and it shows on the nose, with pink grapefruit, yeast, pomegranate, and honey toast. Quite rich and full-bodied on the palate, with a dominant citrus note: kumquat and pink grapefruit echoing the nose. Decent length, and vibrant, palate-cleansing acidity. Very good as an aperitif. I like this maison's style. Should have another decade or so in it at least.

  • While the wine is in the glass the mousse is almost nonexistent with only an initial spray of bubbles around the rim of the glass which then quickly quiets down. It appears almost as a still wine. On the palate, the mousse gently comes alive with an exuberant petulance. The color is now almost amber. The mouth is full of baking apices, orange zest, yeast, apple cider and delicate brioche. The finish is almost an almond, but in no way is this wine oxidized. Completely dry, the wine finishes with a richness. Incredibly balanced acidity. 12% on the front label but North Berkeley’s label on the back says 13% (?). Disgorged October 1998. 100% Grand Cru from Ambonnay and Bouzy. With pumpkin soup initially and then with roasted quail (Thanksgiving). Highly Recommended.

  • Disgorged March 2004 after 56 months on lees. Mid gold. Persistent fine mousse. Rich honeyed nose. Black fruits and sugared almonds. Extremely full and rounded pinot nose and a very long finish. Similar to Selosse Contraste. Excellent

  • Tasted like metal. Poured down the drain.
