  • From a bottle stood for a week and decanted 4hrs, but from which I'd taken some Coravin glasses a few weeks ago. This didn't show as well as before, probably because of my recent Coravins. Retained the vibrant nose of cranberry, raspberry and mandarin orange, but lacked the usual leather, chestnut and truffle. Big in the mouth with serious amounts of herbs, rose, smoke and a grip. Lacked the usual potpourri mid-palate. I usually score this 97-98pts but this was 'only' 95-96pts.

  • From a perfect cellar bottle, nice and clear. Short cork but high fill and no leaks. Nose is equally split between bright red fruit (cranberry and raspberry with mandarin orange emerging) and savoury notes of leather, chestnut and truffle. It smells old straight out of the bottle, but with air this becomes sweet cherry. In the mouth this initially also seems a little tired, with acidic tertiary flavours, but with about 15mins in the glass it blossoms and becomes very powerful with a huge finish of herbs, rose and a touch of orange that seems to build in intensity until it finally ends in a gorgeous finish that was initially very dry and savoury but became pipe tobacco and then smoke with air. Fantastic interest and a joy to drink. After 30mins this doesn't fade but actually gets sweeter with a stronger potpourri nose. The wine actually held up for 4hrs(!) when it had wonderful fireplace aromas of smoke and wood, and gorgeous rich mouthfeel with plenty of smoke. I'm sure it would have lasted longer but by this point it was too delicious and I drank it all. Almost like a more acidic (and slightly more powerful) 82 LMHB by the end and a wonderful experience! 3 bottles left and no hurry at all to drink up... this REALLY benefited from air.

  • The 1935 Cappellano lives up to the slogan 'Super Barolo' which it bears on its label. With comparatively little air, this bottle revealed an explosive and kaleidoscopic bouquet of red cherries, sweet tobacco, rich spice, dried rose and potpourri. On the palate the wine is ample and expansive, positively billowing with flavor in the mouth and through the exceedingly long finish with an explosiveness reminiscent of a great old Armagnac (though without being at all spiritous). Extraordinary stuff.

  • Classsy, round balanced with an amazing structure and fruit for it's age.

  • NK Cappellano Vertical (Maialino, Gramercy Park Hotel, NYC): Light garnet color with clear edge. Heavenly nose of smoke and juicy cherries. Exquisite in the mouth. Stunningly long and complex. What a way to start this tasting. I brought this and knew it could be dead, but it was far from it. Early candidate for WOTN. What a great experience.
