Community Tasting Notes (25) Avg Score: 87.8 points

  • This bottle is showing closer to the 2016 bottle than last year's. Not sure there's a whole lot left in the tank, but this one certainly seems more alive than last year.

Medium (+) ruby to garnet color. Aromas of dark and dark red fruits, barnyard earthy funk, tar, jalapeno/green pepper, crushed rocks and graphite. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of plum, red apple skin, lemon, orange peel, and minerals. Having this lunchtime with leftover steak was probably a good call today; otherwise, burgers would do well. You could pair this with pork or lighter too though. 87-88

  • 9th Annual Holiday Dinner and Cellar Raid (Naperville, IL): Part of wine dinner and cellar raid so did not take detailed notes. I haven't had one of these in years and I was never really impressed with them. Majority of the guests liked this a lot, although I didn't think it was all that interesting

  • Aged, softened, and a bit muted since the last, and I'd say it's probably at the drink up stage at this point. Medium (+) garnet color. Aromas of dark fruits, graphite, damp leaves and earth, and green/maybe jalapeño pepper pyrazines. Medium body, acid, medium (-) finish, but with lingering minerality and flavors of dark and dark red fruits and a strong mineral (almost medicinal) core.

  • Dense, opaque coloring with ruby at the edges and purple reflections. Aromas of blue/black berry pie, raspberry, and some tar. Mostly fruit going on here. Medium body, acid, and medium(-) finish, with dark fruits, leather, and mineral. Fair amount of sediment. Tannins are pretty integrated. I'm ok at 4 on these. I might be better at 2. Not bad, but not too interesting either at this point in time. I've noticed marked change in cab franc sometimes, so let's see what happens...
