Inky. Enthralling nose of smoked plums (whatever they might be...) On the palate, noticeably acidic, but that is balanced by the copious quantities of fruit. Tannins very fine. An extremely long finish. Superb... more acidic than I remember: definitely needs food to show its best. 14.5%, screwcap. A glass raised in honour of Peter Maxwell Davies, composer of the original Eight Songs for a Mad King, whose funeral it is today here in Orkney.

Completely opaque, deep purple. Big legs left on the glass... On the nose, berry jam, and a whiff of alcohol. And a faint touch of something vegetal, that reminds me, surprisingly, of Bordeaux (though nothing else in the wine does, so maybe it's French oak making itself known). On the palate, rich and smooth as the colour and alcohol suggest: full bodied, rounded, very long, the tannins fine. I gave this 90 to start with then knocked it back a point as I felt it was less complex than the last vintage I tried (2002.) Named after an opera first performed at the winery, written by fellow Orcadian Peter Maxwell Davies. 14.5%.

Inky ruby color. Black pepper, spice, jammy berry and licorice scents. Flavors of chocolate, plums, blackberry jam. Has velvety tannins and alcohol in check at 14.5%. Haven't had since the 2004 but its still an epic reliable fruitbomb.
