5/21 note by Indiscriminate Palate nails it (although my cork was pretty normal for a btl this old). It was very much wine still at age 55+ and we finished the whole bottle.

Spinning capsule; fill into lower neck; cork came out easily. Opaque, slightly cloudy, almost-brown tawny with a bit of a ruby rim. Plums, raspberries, leather on the fairly pronounced nose. Silky mouthfeel on a medium or medium-minus body. Sour berries, dusty leather, and a citrus/wood combination that lasts through the surprisingly long finish. Still some light, slightly grippy but fine tannin and medium-plus acid that carries through the finish. Overall, this is obviously mature and past its prime, but not yet dead and still showing some fruit and structure that isn't complex but is quite enjoyable and not just as a history lesson.

Tasted blind. Really nice showing of this old bird. Both the nose and the palate made me guess Cote Rotie and not Barolo. There was that tell tale farmyard, cured meat, peppery, sour cherry nose of aged Northern Rhone Syrah. None of the heaviness and rusticity of the Nebbiolo that usually turns me off with Piedmont wines. A great, mature Barolo.

2/23/2024 - MC2 Wines Likes this wine:
Drinks well. Poured super clear. Right in the right spot. Again more dried fruits. A background of baking spices.

Similar notes to prior bottle a month before. In good shape for its age, if a bit smoky
