From magnum. Deep ruby color. Intense aromas of dark cherry, exotic spices, tobacco, chocolate. Medium+ acidity, fine tannins, full of life. Intense taste of dark cherries, spices, dark chocolate. Wine is rich and intense. Long.

One of the best wines I've pulled out of my cellar in years, The magnum was aged perfectly with soft tannins and delicate fruit. It was a perfect compliment to a Christamas Eve lasagna.

WSET blinds; 5/15/2017-6/11/2017 (Chicago, IL): Served double blind in a flight where it was known all the wines were from the same country. Stewed and heat-damaged. There was a moment where I thought this could have been a really shitty ripasso, given the stewy and cloying fruit here. But at the end of the day (and after learning the provenance), I'm pretty certain this was actually heat-damaged.

Opened a bottle that was purchased on release and kept in storage 10 years. Fabulous concentration, secondary flavors have developed, fruit still delicious. Lots of sediment has dropped out. This wine is in a great place right now. The oak and extracted fruit that were predominant in the earlier years after release have settled into a much more integrated, compelling wine.

(La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barbera d'Asti Superiore (Bionzo)) Oaked watermelon nose; watermelon and oaky cherry palate, still a bit tight, with depth and plush tannins; long finish
