  • This is a child of the vintage, more than anything else. Totally open and accessible, but lacks both the structure and the persistence of a truly good or great vintage. Notes of tar, some cherries, graphite, also some flowery notes and smoke, as well as some tobacco. The older this wine is getting the more the terroir is muddled and it‘s just turning into a easy drinking Barolo that lacks the character to be really memorable. This might sound a little negative, but like many 2009s it‘s time to drink this up. It‘s not gaining anything from further storage. Having said this, it‘s still a perfumed, easy to drink and pleasurable bottle.

  • Popped and poured. The nose is so opulent and perfumed - crushed rose petals, strawberry compote and rhubarb. On the palate it’s red fruit but ripe, ample acidity, salinity, and fine but persistent tannins. It’s approachable but young.

  • Drank side by side with 2011 Margheria, San Rocco was more enjoyable. Slight tannic initially but woth air, dried fruits and fig and some after sweet notes which i like. All this after 5h of air. Still got 1 more bottle. Excited to see how it turns out in another 5 yrs.

  • Magnum.

  • Slightly darker ruby color than the Margheria right next to it, but also showing first signs of light bricking towards the rim. With some air wide open, beautifully perfumed. Seductive and sexy notes of red and dark red cherries, tobacco leaf, cedar wood, leather, tar, menthol, some black tea. It's medium-full bodied, doesn't have the depth of the very best vintages but good freshness for 2009. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin adding some structure. The tannin seems a little riper than in the Margheria. Good length. An very good San Rocco, especially considering the more difficult vintage. I would drink this over the next 5-7 years while the fruit is vibrant and the aromatics are there. Not sure if this will be especially long-lived.
