[Original note: You know, as these age, I like the Las Madras better.] That could have been a vintage issue. My previous tasting note on the Kalen's was on a 2009, and that was doing really well in late 2018. So, YMMV.

I really enjoyed this. Less spicy than some domestic Syrah, this was satiny and light of foot, with some spice and pepper, but loads of blue/black berry fruit (huckleberry, blueberry). I like my Syrah's more blue than red (if that makes sense...) so this was very much in my style, and drinking beautifully right now.

Popped and poured. This wine is inky black with an aromatic nose of blackberry, musk and truffles. On the palate, full-bodied, but elegant with pronounced flavors of blackberry, plum, smoked meat, tobacco, cocoa and a whole cabinet full of baking spices. There 's no Viognier iin this blend of Syrah clones, but the flavor profile reminds me of a stellar Northern Rhone from a particulary warm vintage. Lengthy, slightly tannic finish, suggesting that the wine will age gracefully for at least 3 years, but it 's sufficiently integrated that I wouldn't wait. Outstanding! Multiple bottles tasted with consistent notes.

Improved since my last tasting in 2013. Inky, with blackberry and dark fruit. Notes of cocoa and nutmeg.
