A compelling proposition for the ageing qualities of the Barossa, GSM blends and particularly this middle-ranked representative of the Rockford bastion of tradition.
To paraphrase EC (Slowhand), it looked wonderful tonight, from the first snort. Good colour still. Burnt brown shade to a dark core, advanced brick rim.
A time capsule on the nose, of an older school style. Dusty camphor/old wooden chest drawers initially, with an enticing bitter/sweet high note emerging. Dried figs, sour cherry, amaro, malty notes, no heat.
Well-appointed medium bodied palate. Fine lines, on point intensity, and flow. All the characters from the nose coalesce into an elegant package on the palate. Subtle leather appears from the wings too. So light on its feet for such a notorisouly hot year. No sign of the 14.5%. A delicacy to how it's all poised together.
Well into the mature zone, but still fresh. Delightful. Looked like an elder eminence beside the surprisingly elegant 2019 Basket Press Shiraz. On this showing, a strong case for cellaring the Moppa Springs. My couple of 2018s are going into hibernation.
Two things took this tasting occasion into a higher realm. The bottle arrived unheralded, a mystery wine a good buddy at the winery slipped in as part of a swap. A testament to the league of generous cellar rats and wine geeks.
I shared it with a fine workmate, Mr Helmondo, our first man in China. Invoked memories of a stunning Agrapart Complantee we had in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, 2019, before the screws were turned.
A good way to roll, ‘further up the (Krondorf) Road’.

Purchased direct from winery. Very good cork, great nose. Colour deep red and appealing. Mouthfeel full and rich, although not as silky as I recall from previous bottles of this wine and vintage. Taste of cherry and some vanilla, lingering spicy/ peppery aftertaste. Delicious wine.
