  • Peter Lauer's Faß 9 Riesling comes from Kern, which is a parcel within the west-facing side of the Ayler Kupp vineyard. 10% alcohol.

Pale lime green color. Sweet and fruity nose with aromas of peach, some floral apple blossom, light notes of honeycomb, a little bit of ripe orange and mineral hints of wet stones and flint smoke. The wine is ripe, mellow and gentle on the palate with juicy, semi-sweet flavors of lemon marmalade, apple jam, some apricot, light notes of canned pineapple and a hint of stony minerality. The acidity feels a bit too modest for this much sweetness. The finish is rich and juicy with moderately long flavors of fresh golden apples, some honey, a little bit of pineapple, light steely mineral notes and a hint of orange marmalade.

A rich, juicy and sophisticated Riesling with lots of fruit but perhaps a bit too little acidity for the sweetness. The wine has a lot of nuance, but unfortunately it lacks the weightlessness, playfulness and elegance typical of Mosel Riesling - which seems to be quite common in wines from the 2011 vintage. This is not a bad wine by any means, it just feels a bit too soft and weighty for my preference. Perhaps the wine will gain some finesse as it ages and loses the sense of sweetness over the years?

  • Crazy nose and tropicals Tiki - crushed ice mountain, almost falernum. Mint, anise wash. Tiki drink definitely Zombie. Sweetness lovingly checked. A bananas wine.

  • Darn, this was slightly dark in color and taste. It has just enough flaw to not want to drink it.

  • Medium yellow. Bigger than I expected (compared to RF last year). Beautiful nose of lime, tangerine, crushed stones, some saline + broth. Big, but focused, powdery & deep. Enters big with lime, apple, stone, broth. Very concentrated but with excellent focus. Finish is bitter with peach, lime, stone. Finish isn't as knit as the rest - maybe with time. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4-4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16.5/20.
