Central Otago Visit; 12/20/2014-1/1/2015 (Queenstown and surrounds, Central Otago, New Zealand): Transparent deep red ruby jewel colour with a surprising slight mandarin orange tinge at the meniscus. Nose is earthy sweaty dog fur, lots of spice on the cinnamon end of the scale, red cedar shingles, coffee beans and some high piano notes of strawberry. Palate is super fresh acidic attack followed by over-tannic red and black cherries. Lots of tannic structure and minerality but rather austere and I can't see how this will harmonize. Disappointing compared to the Amisfield Pinot Noir 2011 and especially disappointing because traditionally over the past 20 years I have held this this winery in the top 5 in Central Otago for serious Pinot Noir. Maybe it just needs more time to evolve.

Airplane and Airport Lounge Wines – BA FC Lounge Heathrow
Tart strawberry and cranberry palate. Nice level of acidity to back it up. Comes across a little fruit forward but not too over bearing. Somewhere between a Burgundy and a California Pinot. Closer to California. Nice stuff if this is your style

By the bottle at the BA lounge. Opened for more than 30 minutes would be our guess. Light spicy nose, lots of red fruit on the nose. Good and balanced sweet core carries the wine, light heat feeling on the palate. Good fresh firm tannin. For those who like the style this is a pretty solid expression of new world Pinot. Not exactly our style but still proper wine.88-90

(Mt. Difficulty Pinot Noir Bannockburn) Dark cherry red color; appealing, focused, tart cherry, cranberry nose; Pommard-like, tart cherry, cranberry, mineral palate with medium acidity and grip; medium-plus finish 92+ points (12 mos in French oak)

Martinborough Vineyards and Mount Difficulty tasting (Ivy Bottle Shop, Sydney): Ruby coloured. Biscuit, slight beetroot, cedar, slight sandalwood, red fruit, perfumed. In the mouth there is concentrated red fruit, very chewy tannin, alcohol warmth. Meh.
