Stupendous, but very young. Firm. Firm. Let me say that again - this wine is still very firm. Not the acidity of an 05, but the tannins are still front and center, and growing over time in glass. I'd be concerned, but this has the requisite, big, detailed and impeccably balanced red fruit to handle the long haul. Give this 10 years. Really. Agree with Burgundy Al that this is not very Volnay like (yet) but not in the assessment of a rustic character. This bottle has class, just young. And did I mention "firm?" As I read through tasting notes, sounds like bottle variation to me, but this bottle really was superb, and built for the long, long haul - with balance to handle it. 92pts, with a point of upside down the road.
Bright, medium ruby/garnet core, medium pale garnet rim. Nose is quite rich with slightly smoky dark cherry fruit, moist earth, notes of undergrowth and chocolate. Medium/full bodied, rich dark cherry fruit, vanilla, earth. Soft but quite fulsome tannins, generous fruit, fresh acidity, notes of coffee on the good length finish. This is quite big and still quite oaky, and not particularly "Volnay like", but reasonably well balanced and thus quite drinkable. May improve more time in bottle - leave last bottle at least another 5 years.
I have now had two bottles of this with very similar results. Upon opening, there were promising aromas of strawberries, wood, and forest floor. However, the fruit blew off quickly, and both the nose and the palate were overwhelmed by funkiness. While many commenters here have referred to cork taint, I think that given its prevalence it is probably more likely a lot of brett. Whatever it is, it is too strong to ever be described as pleasant. Based on this wine's premier cru status and vintage, I expected more from it. Not worth whatever you paid.
