  • This is the Reserva, not the Reserva de Familia.
14% alcohol. Good long dense cork with no wine penetration.
The colour is not very deep. The nose is dominated by American oak, with some aromas of wild berries trying hard to come through. In the mouth, the dreaded oak is again very much in evidence, but one can perceive a vivacious fruity light weight wine underneath, something like a Valpolicella maybe.
I know that American oak is constitutive of most people's idea of Rioja, but it does not have to be so, as shown by the recently tasted Artadi Rioja Pagos Viejos.
I really do not see the point of going to the trouble of producing wine from hand-picked grapes (according to the back label) only to ruin it by intemperate methods of élevage.
Not for me, I am afraid.

  • shared with pat at selkirk manor to celebrate the end of the work week. we had purchased this bottle at a wine dinner sponsored by stage left a year ago. enjoyed it very much that evening. not much feedback from other users since then regarding longevity so decided to pop and pour. tonite's bottle was good but did not seem to b quite as expressive as last time. taste profile is on the mark rioja but body seemed a bit light for a riserva. perhaps this is not the most successful of vintages. tempted to buy more but will do a little more homework before making a decision.

  • Purple fruit with an unpleasant metallic characteristic on the nose; grape and oak on the palate. Bitter, tannic finish. This is either cooked or not good at all. "Wine-of-the-month club" offering from a well-known retailer that seems like an overstock.

  • Blind tasted. Oak, baking spice, vanilla, raspberry, black cherry, red plum, cedar, tobacco, mod plus tannins. Correctly guessed Rioja.

  • Oak, and little 'grapey', like concord grapes. Nice balance and pleasant, but nothing really exciting. Moderate body, integrated tannins.
