Community Tasting Notes (11) Avg Score: 83.0 points

  • Deep, dark garnet; nose of sour cherry, cacao, minerals; very prominent acidity; well integrated tannins; very long aftertaste, with persistent bitterness, as with a digestivo amaro, but without the sweetness and spice of a typical amaro.

It seems to me that the reason for this wine's dramatic range of votes is that it is truly different than most wines, thanks to the partially dried grapes and double fermentation meant to mimic the Veneto's Ripasso style or even a baby Amarone.

The wine has an excellent QPR, but the elevated acidity and bitterness leaves me wondering when to serve it, as I can think of other wines that would go better for each recipe that pops into my head. For that reason I would encourage Masi to shift gears here and either make it a bigger, more hedonistic New World style wine, or dial it back to imitate a typical Venetian Ripasso. This wine right now is neither one, and suffers as a result.

  • Very flat nose with just some scents of dark fruit. The mid palate was somewhat watery with almost no tannin and low to med acidity. No oak. Short finish.

  • Judging by the score range, this wine really divides opinion and I am not going to be able to add any clarity to it. Having previously decided that the malbec/corvina blend was not for me I relented and gave it another go.
Short and tight best described our first evening with it, and we abandoned it.
Returning to it later in the week, I was pleasantly surprised to find it much more to my liking. Maybe a bottle for keeping for a couple of years might work, but dont know enough about it to be sure.
