  • PnP at cellar temperature. Pours light gold with no obvious sediment. The nose is reminiscent of Champagne, with a lees-driven profile of rich vegetation (tomato vine), wet stone, and touches of stone fruit and brown butter. Similarly complex on the palate, with mostly tertiary characteristics, though some lemon zest, jalapeno, and creamy lees-derived, bready flavors persist. Medium(+) acid and a weighty, creamy mouthfeel are welcome additions to the mature flavors. Some tannin-like puckering dryness (possibly from extended aging on the lees?) are a very unique feature of this wine.

This wine seems to be on the backside of development. A year ago this was probably drinking at peak, but extending the life of a Sauvignon blanc by several years is an admirable achievement. In 2013-14, this would have probably merited a 93-point rating. As it is, in mid-2016, we will give it a rating of "excellent," 91/100.

  • I served this in my wine course. Nose leans a bit more toward fruit than mineral. Pears, quince. Mouth is well balanced, though simple. Seems like maybe a touch of lactic acids. Finish seems odd and a bit different than I remember.

  • This Champs de Cri bottling is showing the complexity gained as a result extended lees aging in the vinification of grapes sourced from 55-year-old vines. Medium-gold and intensely aromatic, it delivers aromas and flavors of jasmine, lemon verbena, butterscotch and cardamom. Freshly acidic, light-to-medium-bodied, seamlessly alcoholic (13%) and with beautiful minerality, it builds on the mid-palate and closes medium-to-long. This is a perfectly aged Pouilly-Fumé without the slightest hint of oxidation. It should be at its best over the next two years. Drink now-2016.

  • More herbal; Less bright green
