  • Consumed with another 98 Craig Syrah. Both were a bit funky and flabby initially with a slight black cherry tartness and earthy leather mustiness. Over the course of the next hour each opened to reveal black berry fruits and a similar tone of sweet vanilla mocha with a moderate tannin, acidic finish. Give them an hour, but then consume them in one sitting. We held back part of the Syrah to finish the next evening and the funk started to set in again.

  • Pretty much DOA and should have been drunk years ago. Pulled this from the dark recesses of Doug's cellar with no expectation. Faded, cloudy red in the glass. Bandaides on the nose. Interesting none-the-less. Quickly down the drain.

  • An older Zin... Still Excellent. Not as good as the last bottle we had. Though they were stored the same.

  • We blind tested three Zinfandels:

    2001 Cuvaison Zinfandel
2003 Turley Zinfandel Moore "Earthquake" Vineyard
    1998 Robert Craig Zinfandel

The Cuvaison was the least favorite in the end but its bright fruit right after opening had it in the lead for a short time. The real Aficionados in the group immediately identified the Craig as the mellow soul. It was the leader for the first hour. The Turley was the least favorite in the first hour. I don't think of a Zinfandel needing to "open" but this Turley needed to open. Like the thoroughbred it is, it gained strength and complexity as the race went into the backstretch. Rounding the last turn it pulled out in the lead and won by several lengths.

None of these Zins was bad. To call the Cuvaison a loser is to dismiss the 91 point ranking it received. At $27 for the bottle it was a third the price of the Turley and just over half the price of the Craig. The value award goes to the Cuvaison.

Tasting were Rob, Rebbecca, Amanda, Dan, Cedric, Melissa and Bryan. Cedric and Melissa were visiting from Europe and that is why we pulled out the Napa Zins. Bryan was visiting from Manhattan. After the Zins were done we popped a 98 Dom Perignon that was a fantastic wedding gift to Rob and Rebbecca from Melissa. That was the highlight of the evening.

  • First had this in 2005, poured by Robert Craig's wife herself, and was impressed then. This is surprisingly drinking well still today. It has evolved into a very rich wine. The palate had a roasted blackcherry and plum like flavor with a nice oaky/cedary finish. The nose has some aroma of vanilla and licorice.
