Monthly Tasting Group HWS #102; Rioja (By CvR): Tonight we tasted 3 of these wines fully blind beside each other; the 2005, 2006 and 2008. This will be one tasting note for all three of them. All three have a beautiful bouquet with dark fruits, sweet spices and a good dose of beautiful oak. In the 2006 and 2008 there is sweet licorice in the bouquet as well. In the 2006 also some cherries. The 2005 has as an extra some leather and tobacco and a pleasant touch of barnyard. The oak seems to be even more luxurious. On the palate all three vintages show dark forest fruits, some creamy red fruits, vanilla from the oak, juicy acidity and good tannin. In the 2008 there were some plums and cherries as well and the tannin still has a firm bite. The 2006 showed some laurel and slightly sticky tannin and is in its early maturity stage. In the 2005 the acidity and tannin is soft and mild. Overall; the 2005 the most ready and luxurious wine at the moment. No hurry for the next 3+ years. The 2006 a little less ready and luxurious, but still a lovely wine. Wait until 2017 – 2019 for optimal pleasure. The 2008 is beautiful as well, but the least interesting at this moment. Give it another 3+ years of ageing to see what it really has to offer. 2005; 91. 2006; 90. 2008; 89 - 90+

great balance, good drinkable now, typical Rioja, vanilla from american oak and dark cherries from tempranillo, fine acidity, one dimensional in the finish compared to 2004 (92), would drink it over the next 5 years, I think it's not getting better (50+5+12+15+8)

Delicious bottle with a lot of oak in the beginning. Oak subsided and became a beautiful well balanced Rioja.

fruit forward, berries, vanilla hints of chocolate well integrated oak with a smooth finish. Enjoy now but may have 5-6 good years left in it.
