Still very much alive but on the downhill slope. Opened and the initial smells let us know it was fine. Did a decant for sediment and then served after a 45 minute hold. Strongly into tertiary territory, with a few fruit notes still peeking through. Finish medium length with a dry acidity clearing out the flavors in the back. Based on this showing I doubt the wine ever approaches JG's ambitious 2050 end date. I'll look to drink my last bottle in the next 2-3 years.

Full nose is a dead ringer for Northern Rhone with loads of black olive, sweaty black fruit and smoked meat. Nice power and layers in the aroma. Palate has full body and still quite youthful black fruit. The flavor echoes the nose with loads of savoury notes like black olive, meat, smoke and sweat. Nice long finish. A terrific bottle of old-school California syrah. A shame that the Durell vineyard has had all of it's Syrah pulled in favor of Chard and Pinot.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Chicago, IL): Brilliant syrah. Aromatic, with lots of black fruit and just a faint bit of charred meat and olives. The palate shows a charcuterie plate much more clearly, although the sweet red berries are still very prominent. The density and fruitiness on this are amazing, and based on all the stuffing that this has, I wouldn't be concerned about letting these sleep more.

Blackcurrant and raspberry, smoky, meaty notes, with black olives and underbrush. Lovely and long (some others don’t enjoy as much). A-/B+
