  • My last bottle, from a case bought in early 1987. And this one was the best. The previously brutal tannins have all gone and what's left is figgy, porty, sweet, but not at all heavy. There's a warm nuttiness behind it all. Unique wine.

  • Dinner at Colicchio & Sons (NYC): Bricked black. Reticent nose, at first, of tapenade, some smoky anchovy thing, capers, stones, raspberries. Later, a freaking jar of blackberry/boysenberry jam, sweet and gushing fruit. Palate big, very tannic, but with massive reserves of concentrated fruit, too. Kind of a baby! Very full bodied. Pretty long, but tannic there, too. Amazing wine. Epic. A little exhausting like and epic, too. Wow!

  • Bought a case of this on release and so it's one of the few wines which I've tracked for over 20 years. Browning, but still dark, the tannin has finally softened and it still shows that very distinctive chestnut and mulberry fruit character, savoury to start with but the sweetness then comes through and the final impression is one of ripeness and sweetness. A singular wine
