  • Past its prime. Would have paired better with a more earthy dish. But still enjoyable.

  • Light garnet in color. Notes of leather, plum and tobacco. Nice acidity, smooth tannins, med body and dry. Drinking well, but would say just past it’s peak.

  • still live, enjoyed the bottle, lacks a bit of complexity and it's not perfectly balanced on the acidity side that comes out a bit too much on the palate, but overall enjoyable with food

  • Dark cherry red color with a bronze hue and a little bit of haze. Very meaty, robust and a bit over-developed nose with aromas of syrupy oxidation, some old furniture and a hint of mushroomy sous-bois. Not much fruit left. The wine is medium-to-moderately full-bodied, dry and somewhat gritty on the palate with flavors of sour cherries, some bloody iron character, a little bit of roasted spice and a hint of leafy over-developed character. The structure is quite austere due to the high acidity, somewhat grippy tannins that build up slowly and the lack of fruit. The finish is long, harsh and angular with flavors of iron, gamey blood notes, sour cherry bitterness, tannic astringency and a hint of nutty oxidation.

Meh. Starting to fall apart pretty badly. Offers so very little enjoyment at this point I'm tempted to write this wine off as oxidized. The wine is still thoroughly drinkable, but has been on the decline for quite a while now. Definitely not a wine to write home about.

  • Year 2 - Super Tasting 1 of 6 - Dave does Barolo (Dave's House - Kitchener, ON): I found this and the following '85 to be remarkably similar. Both dark, clean expressions with plenty of fruit and some maturity. Nose of powdered candy, bubblegum, licorice, anise and mushroom. Palate has a fair bit of acid, with the tannins beginning to integrate into the complete package. Another enjoyable wine lacking the wow factor.
