Had this with Moroccan style lamb. To my mind close to a perfect maturity, making me glad that I had kept it so long. A little more fruit than I expected from a traditional gran réserva. But the aromas of vanilla and dry cherries were there as also expected. I think this would have held on for up to 5 years if kept in a coolish cellar. So no need to rush but do open it when the mood strikes.

I think this has seen its best, lacking depth and conce traction, fruit has turned jammy. Still drinkable, but not as it was a couple of years ago. Drink up.

Quarterly Blind Tasting - Bring Anything (My Place): Fifth wine of blind, "bring anything" tasting. I guessed $40 2009 Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend from France....swing and a miss. Very surprised to see a rioja when revealed. Obviously, from my blind guess I thought this wine punched well above its weight. Very balanced and Bordeaux-like but still round in the mouth like a much bigger wine. One of the better riojas I've had. Ready now and probably good for the next 5 years.
My 92 points, group 91. #1 of 7 wines on the night

Much better than last bottle. A lot more secondary now. Toasted oats, tobacco, leather, cloves. Fine, mild tannins. Very pleasant.
