  • Huge step up from the other wines. Brett, earthy with enough red fruit and a hint of oak. Not Chapoutier level oak but it's there. Delicious flavours and grippy finish.

  • Fermented and macerated for 4 weeks in concrete tanks. Aged for 14-18 months in oak barrels (30-50% new).

Almost fully opaque black cherry color. Ripe, rich and quite complex nose with aromas of ripe blackberries, perfumed floral tones, a little bit of sweet, toasty oak spice, light lifted VA tones and a hint of toffee. The wine is full-bodied, rich and quite fruity on the palate with concentrated flavors of ripe dark fruits, stony minerality, some sweet-toned oak spice, a little bit of brambly blackberries, light floral tones, a hint of sweet, chocolatey oak spice and a lifted touch of balsamic VA. The wine is quite smooth and mellow on the palate due to its soft medium acidity, although the tannins are quite ample, firm and grippy. The finish is rich, juicy and somewhat tannic with long flavors of peppery spice, sweet-toned toasty oak, some meaty Syrah tones, a little bit of ripe blackberry, light chocolatey tones, a floral hint of perfumed violets and a touch of plummy fruit.

A nuanced, complex and moderately tannic Hermitage with a lot of concentration and flavor, but lacks the verve and freshness of the "West Bank" wines tasted alongside (from Cornas and St. Joseph). Also the oak use feels a lot more prominent here - the Cornas and St. Joseph wines were all about pure, fresh Syrah fruit, whereas this wine shows obviously a lot more oak influence. Although a good, firm and enjoyable Hermitage with good sense of depth, I didn't find this wine as enjoyable as the other two wines due to the lower acidity and more pronounced oak character. Hopefully some additional aging might integrate the oak a bit better with the fruit - although the modest acidity really doesn't promise much aging-wise.
