So we are generally very happy with D-G's Cherry Ridge Syrah across many vintages (including the 2012). This particular bottle, however, appears to have dropped off a bit as it gets older. Needed to let it sit in the glass for 15 minutes or so to open up, and when it did, it was still a bit on the rougher side. The community suggests 2020 as the end-date, and think I'd probably have to concur based on this bottle. We do have one more bottle left from our original four, so we'll see what happens with that one some other day.

This was the last of a batch of RRV beauties I bought in a trip with friends in 2011, so I'm biased to like it. It was deep, dark purple with a dark rim. The nose was sublime: dark fruit, blood, iron, and herbs. The mouthfeel and viscosity were similarly wonderful; one wouldn't call it sweet, for sure, but round, soft, and smooth with tremendous depth of flavor. One would never confuse this with a Rhone; it has far less edge (and complexity?) than the best of the northern rhone syrahs. This is pure California, and really, really terrific.

Decanted for 2 hours and was very smooth with big bing cherry but not sour. A great wine by itself and became much more layered with food. Although paired with grilled burgers, it's certainly worthy of something nicer.

Smooth, velvety, dark cherry with a hint of vanilla and thyme, medium body. Gorgeous with flank steak.
