  • Prior bottle was almost 13 months ago and this wine continues to improve along the lines I'd hoped. Black cherry and a touch of plum on the nose along with a nice mix of earth, minerals and light spices. Between medium and full bodied and the black cherry upfront is a touch more rounded and open, but the blackberry still has good brightness, resulting in good contrast. Mid-body adds depth as well as darker black cherry and plum. Transition to finish continues to integrate, with tannins more fine grained and acidity and tart black cherry slightly better blended into the mid-body. Shows earth, spices and minerals through the finish. Overall, felt like the fruit notes were more rounded throughout, but with depth in the middle, brightness still upfront and better finishing transition, the additional time has served this wine well. Should continue to evolve along these lines and I'll save my last bottle for fall 2024.

  • Prior bottle was 14 months ago and the wine has improved along the lines I'd hoped in that time. Black cherry, earth and light spices on the nose. Between medium and full bodied with black cherry upfront, adding brighter blackberry and darker plum through the middle. The fruit continues to show well, in line with my prior bottle and exhibiting a good mix of depth and brightness. The improvement came on the backside. Tannins and acidity are in much better balance with the wine and lead into the tart black cherry, earth, spice and mineral notes on the finish much more cleanly than previously. This helps to define the backside notes, give length to the finish and leave the entire wine feeling more complete. Took about 3-4 hours to fully open up and show in this fashion. Next bottle for me will be Fall 2023 as there's potential for additional future improvement.

  • Black cherry, earth, leather and spice notes on the nose. Between medium and full bodied (14.5% ABV) with really pretty black cherry notes upfront that show a rounded openness. Mid-body adds brighter blackberry and darker plum notes that are both integrated nicely with the upfront notes. Tart blackfruit, spices, earth, minerals and leather through the finish. Tannins provide structure, with a fine grained edge, but the acidity does stick out a little bit at this stage. Overall, while I thought this wine certainly showed well, it fell noticeably short of the superlative 2001 and 2004 and also short of the 2007 in terms of (i) fruit complexity, (ii) depth and (iii) overall balance. Some of the potential is there and as the acidity continues to integrate, the resulting wine could be more harmonious. This wine will never reach the heights of the 2001 or 2004, but additional cellar time could be beneficial. I have been patient with this wine (purchased in 2015 and this was my first bottle), so I'll save my next bottle for early Fall 2022 and reassess.

  • Popped and poured and had alone, then with Manchego with local honey and mixed nuts. Brownish rim (see Brunello). Some cellar-y funk initially, but blew off after 1/2 hour or so. Savory with ultra refined tannins. Structural citric tinge mid-palate. Mouth-filing, all elements working towards a grippy but velvety finish. Pretty tasty stuff. A testament to the quality of the winery and vintage.

  • Just ok....might have been corked....Like the Caparzo better. Got this on sale for $32.00. Wouldn't pay any more than that.
