  • A String of Successful Pinot Noirs!; 5/3/2022-9/7/2022 (NW DeeCee): Ruby to the rim. A: spice and red fruit with a touch of funky earth. F: quite a long and developing palate, with loads of tangy red fruit and spice playing along. There’s still a strong beam of mineral and a cleansing rip of acid on the finish.

Quite a lovely bottle that was open over three evenings. Perhaps a bit more expressive and full on the third day, and certainly not losing steam at all.

  • Accidently grabbed my last bottle. Similar the older Matello bottle, this was a bit fuller on the palate likely showing the vintage. Still leads with a narrow, focused loam/earth and herbal spice character with just a hint of mint --which I assume is the whole cluster. Quite nice, I suspect may still deepen with some time.

  • Step one, please decant this. I did not, and had to pour the wine back and forth a couple of times between two glasses to make up for it. Once I did that the veil pulled away, and the earth emerged. Much like an older Goodfellow (actually labeled Matello) Pinot I had several weeks ago, this showed a leafy, loamy character, but this time with more brightness, more cut. I would expect that a few more years in the cellar (or better planning on my part) would reveal the same depth of character as that 2010. That said, the freshness, and crisp fruit of this wine, combined with the emerging sous bois character is very enticing.

  • Better on night 2. Still tightly wound. Red fruited. Has a bit of a wild edge to it on the palate that a can’t place—a bitterness in the acidity. Sorta inbetween on maturity as the fruit starts to turn away from its primary roots. Best to hold.

  • I had a Jekyll/Hyde experience with my last bottle 2yra ago, unclear if that was an off bottle or if time was helpful, but this was exquisite. Mushroom and forest floor aromatics, with slightly tart cherry fruit on the palate. Acidity is firm and forward, giving this a clean energetic lift. A little bitterness on the finish with some fine tannins. Definitely on the lean acidic side of things on style, but seems like everything is is in balance for a very nice wine in 3-5yrs, and probably longer. I will try and hold my remaining bottles until then.
