Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • This bottle has a single cru designation on it that I can't make out. Not because the label is in bad shape, but the writing is so ornate that I can't distinquish some of the letters.

Soft ruby in color, with some bricking at first that faded with air. At first, this had the classic barolo profile of tar and roses, with more tar, rust, and smoke notes than roses. After about half an hour (half had been poured into a split right off and into the fridge), it developed a mind-boggling funkiness that was hard to get past. Talk about barnyard. The pigs were rolling in this stuff! But I persevered, and underneath the stink was a soft fruit profile with ample acid, resolved tanins, and a nice but not complex wine. Very satisfying. Another half hour and the funk is gone (really noticable changes in this stuff), and the classic, earthy Barolo profile returns.

That was Friday night. I finished the bottle this evening, Sunday. No sign of funk or barnyard. But, more quietly, a wine that had aged gracefully for 18 years. Sweet fruit, pleasant acid--it held up for two days in the fridge, though didn't develop any additonal depth or complexity. Like many 88s, I see this one as fully mature, but capable of holding for a good while longer.
