Mini ESTG at Asadero Kent (Kent, WA): Mmm, very polished, silky, surprisingly delicate. It's not tired, but it lacks the raw energy and intensity of the 2016 Dirt Vernacular. It makes one ask, should you age SQN Grenache or just pounce on it when young? (I have no doubt on the Syrah side, those reward aging endlessly.)

Kleur: Robijnrood. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 19 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 97/100
Color: Ruby red Aroma / bouquet: Lush, seductive bouquet in which mainly sun-baked fruit (candied cherry, dates and plum) and flowers (roses) predominate. In addition, cedar wood, vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. Taste / Finish: On the palate, this EBV SQN is just as luscious and seductive, the taste opens with retronasal impressions of cherries and plums, thick-juicy with an extreme, almost port-like concentration in a beautiful balance, an enormous mountain of perfectly ripened tannins with a long finish with a pleasant bitterness. Overall / Potential: What is Grenache's superlative? SQN-GRENACHE !!! An incredibly tasty concentrated powerhouse. A lot of a good thing, at least for lovers of extracted wines like Sine Qua Non. Wine lovers who appreciate subtlety, refinement and French-classical elegance will judge this wine as 'too much of a good thing'. I just love it! 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Taste / Finish: 19 + Overall / potential: 9 = 97/100

Sine Qua Non (SQN) Magnum Extravaganza + Bevan, Mike Smith, Sparkling/Champagne, and others (Calistoga): From magnum. Moving from the 2000, 2001, and 2002 SQNs and skipping a few years to embark on the 2007s and 2008s in the lineup, this is where I really started to find pleasure and excitement. Though this Grenache was likely the most reserved of the 2007/2008 SQNs, it still carried beautiful and vibrant flavors indicative of the varietal; performing where it likely ought to be considering its domestic and modern roots, it was a compelling representation of Grenache.
Specific notes of wild black cherry, deep bruised red raspberry, kirsch, saline, incense, cinnamon, forest floor, mulch, garrigue, and hints of charcuterie. Intensely spicy on the attack, with the incense note framing the core fruit. Great weight on the mid-palate. The finish was a touch bitter, with a numbing cinnamon tinge appearing on the tail end. Still some tannins here, but nothing that overpowered the flavors or prevented this wine from showing most of its cards right up front.
A fun ride of a wine. I preferred the Syrah for its darker, more purple-fruited profile; a more complex wine by comparison. Still, this Grenache was an invigorating ride. Drink now and over the next couple of years.

The perfect wine...my WOTN among several 100pt big hitters. Blew away the 100pt 2007 Clos des Papes in side-by-side pairing.

heavy fruit, mild acid and a soft tannin backbone. Fabulous but not life altering
