  • Lovely. All the coiled tension of citrus minerality provides a core spine for the jasmine notes and richness (dry honey) layers. Balance and harmony. Lovely intensity and soft drops to finish with a little caramel/nuts, pomelo and winter tones. Joyous.

Left open for a bit and just a smidge warmer and it totally dives into Alsace LH Gewurz zone. This isn't bad, but thicker and lychee elements with a little drop of sweet are not really my jam here.

  • According to the assistant winemaker at the winery, this is a blend of Assyrtiko (90%), Aidani and Athiri (the two filling out the remaining 10%). Aged exclusively in old 500 liter barrels for 16 months before bottling. Grapes harvested a bit later than the ones destined for regular bottlings, resulting in alcohol level of 14%.

Medium deep greenish color with straw yellow highlights. Expressive, rich and very complex nose with aromas of pineapple, quince, ripe citrus fruits, caramel, some dry old wood, a little bit of toasty and nutty character, a hint of vanilla and a whiff of petrol. Rich, full-bodied and structured palate with some concentration yet also with freshness and lightness from quite pronounced acidity. The flavors are complex and layered with intermingling notes of lemony citrus, stony minerality, Granny Smith apple, vanilla, cream, sea salt, roasted nuts, sweet wood, browned butter and cream. Although the description sounds quite oaky, the wine actually is more fruit-driven with lots of oak-aged complexity in the background, letting the Assyrtiko take the lead. Crisp, mineral and quite intense finish with complex, persistent flavors of nutty toast characteristics, ripe apple, juicy citrus fruits, some honeydew melon, a little cream and a hint of vanilla.

Utterly complex, intense and captivating white; definitely the best white wine from the Karamolegos range and one of the best oak aged whites in Santorini, surpassing many a classic Santorini Assyrtiko that has seen no wood (and I normally prefer them over the oak-aged ones!). Although the oak characteristics are still quite evident and they will most likely integrate further into the background with age, the wine is very sophisticated and elegant already with good prominence on the ripe and concentrated yet impressively structured and mineral fruit. Very recommended. Around 20€ at the winery, but can be bought for some 17-18€ at local mini markets.
