Deep, saturated color that could only be Syrah. A puff of high toned florality made me think of Cote Rotie, but that was evanescent, and shortly thereafter, more stern tones of blackberry, black licorice, evergreen, and sweaty tannins asserted themselves. Medium weight with a surprisingly round entry, strong bitter chocolate notes, beautiful balancing acidity and slightly harsh tannins. Overall, still unevolved, nice interplay of the fruit with the weedier aspects of Syrah that recalled Cabernet Franc.

Dinner at Bar Tartine with some of the SF folks. (Bar Tartine): Love the nose of this wine. It's so full of Syrah goodness. Plenty of black fruit, black olives, garrigue and a bit of bloody meat. There's some nice mid-palate sweetness, with pretty black fruit and a lot of black olive flavors, but there are some seriously hard tannins here. Kindah chunky and coarse and the finish is a bit short. B+.

Bar Tartine with visiting Brad Kane (San Francisco): Smoky, roasted capsicum, scorched grain nose. Tremendous concentration and depth carried well by fine acids. Great minerality, slightly savory, still structured and a little austere at first but with an hour or so of air this was just killing it. Delicious.
