It's been interesting watching Catena's pricing slowly climb since Nicolas Catena won that blind tasting in France in 2000 against Premier Crus (first growth Bordeauxs) and Opus One among others. I suppose if I had a winery that won those sort of contests I'd raise prices, too.
Served at 55F, aerated and allowed to breathe for 30m. The color was a deep purple.
On the nose there was a nice bit of blackberry and a pleasant slightly herbal note.
On the palette there is the expected and typical malbec black fruit (black cherry and blackberry). Not a tremendous amount of layers or complexity in this one. You quickly notice a well rounded mouth feel that coats your mouth and as you swallow you get an appreciation for the balance.
The finish is floral and slightly peppery.
Overall a nice wine. If you can find it for under $15, this is a good QPR.

The parent company of widely-distributed Alamos is Catena, a winery that is one of the foremost in Mendoza. Alamos is easy and very drinkable considering it's price point. The 2014 Red Blend has a nose that is bursting with dark Hudson cherries, juicy plums and a playful whiff of wild underbrush. The attack is equally juicy, with pitched acidity loaded with primary black fruit. There is a touch of earthiness and tobacco on the finish, more or less this is a softly-textured crowd-pleaser. 14.9% ABV | Sample

Argentina & Chile: Vibrant purple color. Smells of juicy plums mixed with smoky blackberries, some tobacco, charred herbs and sweet cola. Medium bodied, slight acid, soft tannins. Chewy blackberries and plums mix with notes of cola, vanilla and tobacco. Fun stuff to drink now, it does well for the price. 65% Malbec, 16% Bonarda, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Syrah.
