  • Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): Not very on the expressive today, well, not in a terribly interesting way. Seems to lean more on the warmer, darker side of things, having sacrificed, for my preferences, a good dose of freshness. That said, not sure why they'd ask a producer to pour a wine that clearly needs more time to sort itself out, if it's to do so that is. And that's the question I'm left with, will this be able to overcome the more pedestrian qualities that render this a bit anonymous? I will vote, with my money, by not placing it in my cellar; too many more exciting wines out there. Either way, HOLD.

  • La Valentina (Abruzzo) & Poliziano (Montepulciano) (2 Amys - Washington DC): Deep, massive aromas but elegant, too, pure, floral. Huge palate (15.5% alcohol) with structured tannins. A bit extracted, with some lower acidity, this is an extremely modern Montepulciano. These descriptions sound over-the-top, and the wine is surely a brooding one, but I find some elegance and velvety aspects to the wine as well. Dark cherry, blackberry, topped in graphite, cocoa, anise, charcoal. Very full and modern, but the quality of the fruit is quite something. A joint venture between La Valentina and Stefano Inama. A single vineyard site at about 1,500 feet, rocky and clay soil, planted in 1971. Aged 15 months in French oak, half new.

  • This is a tough call. I might be perceptually reaching to say this is the extreme end of MdA, but still in the zone. OTOH, it strikes me that blinded I would call this some generic new world oriented modern wine. It is enjoyable, but is also baked fruits, lower acids and broad structures in a way that lacks the earthy and soulful core of great MdA (and isn't the lively zest and carefree of basic MdA.)
