  • Followed the advice on here and decanted for a few hours first. Outstanding. Unfairly good for the money. Full core of rich "Penfolds" fruit, smoothed but not muted by time.

  • I still can’t get my head around this. As with the last bottle, a fairly simple 8-year-old wine is disappointing when first opened but much better next day. As my last note.

  • I found this disappointing when first opened but I thought that it should have more potential and I closed the screw cap, set it aside, and opened a different wine. It spent a night in the fridge because I wanted to slow any deterioration once it had air in the bottle. 24h later it was allowed to warm to room temperature and was a different wine. Very smooth, with good soft ‘sweet’ Penfolds fruit, juicy acidity and very good balance. The initial dusty tannins had totally softened and the wine had become a homogeneous whole. Not a big heavy wine but really rather elegant. A pleasant surprise because I have a few more. If you have any, open it but give it a day to sort itself out. I am sure it has years to develop, yet. 89+
After 48h, it was at least as good. Plenty of sweet, juicy fruit and not showing its age. A revelation, given the poor first impression.

  • With air this was much improved over my last note. A lot of rather manufactured structure but more convincing fruit coming through. The basics aren't quite sound enough to expect it to become much more interesting with further aging.

  • Deep colour. Vaguely boysenberry nose. Structure without concentration. My word what a lot of tartrate sediment. I wonder where that came from? Added acidity edgy but not jagged. Well handled firm tannins. I know that even Koonunga is supposed to have the potential to keep, and maybe this could, but the framework is skeletal and the overall interest just isn't there in my view.
